With finally completing all due assignments, the reality of this momentous trip are beginning to emerge into my subconscious and the excitement is beginning to ferment. Firstly the experience of seeing Dubai and the lavish wealth and new developments will give an awesome view to what can be achieved with enough money. On the other hand Sheffield will give an interesting view towards different urban planning polices and understanding. Of particular interest will be social housing, Sheffield council itself and the underlying left-wing politics.
Other highlights will include exploring the ideas of urban utopias/dystopias, the peak district and York. I’m hoping for an experience that is quite unlike Australia and yet hopefully I will bring back knowledge that can be used in my future career. I will probably find it challenging to adapt to a different culture and city and seeing this is my first time overseas (besides Tasmania) I expect a small amount of adjusting to time-zone differences will take place. I expect Sheffield to be vastly different from anything I have experienced and from research undertaken this will most likely be true, but there is nothing like finding out for yourself!- Jack Roland Wiltshire (Bachelor of Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning)
